The lecture was dedicated to Professor Antony Grant who He passed away unexpectedly in February 2020. Once again, I warmly thank the Psychiatrist and President of the ‘Umbrella’ Organisation, Mr Giotakos Orestis, for the invitation to the conference.

Subject matter and objectives

In my speech I will present what coaching is and what coaching psychology is, it is an opportunity today here to record some definitions, I will describe to you what happens during a coaching session. Then I will talk about how coaching and neuroscience exchange knowledge, if they do, and in conclusion I will come up with the possibilities for collaboration of these fields in the future. The question remains, who needs whom, coaching neurosciences or neurosciences coaching?

In the field of Coaching, already at the beginning of its academic course in 2000, we realized a significant problem: The reason why coaches and clients developed Coaching did not include the knowledge that emerged research and was published in scientific journals. That is, otherwise we learned coaching and otherwise most people in the market baptized it. The same goes for neuroscience. The knowledge generated by research in neuroscience and what is discussed about brain function are two different facts. As between scientific knowledge and the reason it develops for this knowledge, there is emptiness, oversimplification, exaggeration and sometimes distortion. Mostly because of ignorance.

Coaching & Coaching Psychology: What are they and how are they connected?

The relationship between coaching and psychology coaching is relatively simple. The term “coaching” describes the practical application in sessions of the knowledge derived from coaching psychology. CY is a discipline that studies the development and achievement of goals in a non-clinical population.

“Coaching is a reflective process that facilitates positive change through continuous dialogue, with the aim of achieving professional and personal goals” (Lai, 2014). Coaching is mainly applied to large organizations and businesses, middle, senior and top management executives.

The purpose of the sessions is through the goal setting, to activate the person take action. Intervention is achieved by activating our client, its processes self-awareness, of the self-reflection, of self-regulatory and the design. The cycle of self-regulation involves a continuous assessment of progress, present reality and the objective pursued. The person leaves the session always having a plan and starts the implementation of his steps. During the implementation of the plan, he experiences his truth, collects information from the field and returning to the next session he enters the process of reflecting on his experience. There new actions emerge and the cycle continues until we reach the final result.

Coaching-session is a complicated process if we consider that it is a continuous alternation between abstract thoughts and very specific goals. We are constantly moving from the general to the specific. In each goal we invite the coachee to see aspects of himself, to work on the skills needed to achieve it and to recognize his deepest values and intentions. The demands from the coach are great, as he manages a dynamic process with alternations in emotion and the same in goal setting.

Coaching & Neurosciences: Myths and Misunderstandings.

The dialogue between coaching and neuroscience developed in parallel with the founding of coaching psychology in early 2000. Already since about 2005, we have been discussing how we can draw knowledge from neuroscience, update and (if necessary) change the way we do coaching. The questions that this dialogue was asked to answer are:

How does coaching work in terms of nerve – science?

How can neuroscience-derived knowledge confirm or not the effectiveness of coaching?

Which tools work best?

Which techniques are best for the coachee's brain?

What is new about coaching in neuroscience?

So let's see what we're really learning to date, if we're learning something new that upsets the way we work. We learn that:

First, “our brain forms mental representations, maps, with which it approaches reality subjectively”. But we already know this from cognitive psychology (Aaron Beck 1987, Grant 2012, 2015).

Second, ‘our brain resists change because change is difficult’. We already know this from the work of Albert Bandura (1977), Diclemente & Prochaska, (1988).

Third, “neurosciences allow us to coach the human brain and document the effectiveness of coaching”. So until now, in coaching, the brain has remained inactive?

Fourth, “a solution-focused approach is better suited to achieving objectives and solving problems than a problem-focused approach”. The systemic approach has already taught us this since the end of the 20th century.

Fifth, “a catalyst for change and learning is a relationship of trust because the brain learns and changes through relationships”. And of course, we already know this, indicatively, from a Person-Centered Approach to Coaching (Stephen 2006).

Sixth, “memory determines the beliefs and patterns of interpretation of the world that every person has. In this sense, our past is always present but the plasticity of our brain shows us that we can change the beliefs built on our memories”. This, in the pop version of coaching is considered something subversive because there was the idea that coaching deals with the future and psychology with the past. Generally eared and we already knew that. * Personality theories demonstrate the role of our experiences in life (Schultz & Schultz, 2013, EMDR psychotherapy – Saphiro , 2001).

There are two terms that describe the neuroscientific approach to coaching: The first is “neurocoaching” and the second is “brain – based coaching”.

In conclusion: We focus on the wrong points.

The dialogue between coaching and neuroscience is clearly a useful dialogue. However, as Professor A. Grant argues, “until now, there are no elements that radically change the way we coach”. How this dialogue can help:

Neuroscience knowledge can help the coaching professional to form a scientific reference framework so that he/she can make sound decisions within his/her sessions.

Better coaching training programs can be designed based on the neuroscientific approach.

At the research level, imaging studies could enrich our knowledge of how the brain works during coaching rather than our knowledge of coaching itself. To investigate plasticity, activation of areas and networks in non-clinical population.

And certainly, the dialogue between coaching and neuroscience is an opportunity for self-reflection and deeper thinking about how scientific knowledge is communicated to the wider community.

In conclusion, coaching acquires another scientific frame of reference of what it already applies, until something really new emerges for the professional coach, and neurosciences acquire another field of research that can illuminate aspects of brain function in a non-clinical population.

Thank you very much.

This article is the summary of my speech at the 1st Interdisciplinary Conference “Caring the Brain”, entitled “Coaching, Brain and Neuroscience” held 26 & 27 March 2021.
