In this article I present in detail what development in coaching means and how it is achieved.

What does development mean in coaching and how is it achieved?

Development means learning and change, two concepts inextricably linked as one is a component of the other. Learning is about saying goodbye to a side of the self that thinks and acts in a shaped way and strengthening a new side that is equally authentic, that thinks and acts in a new, enriched, i.e. different way.

Development arises as a new perception of things and is accompanied by the cultivation of new skills and behaviors required to achieve goals. Therefore, change is both internal (self, thoughts, feelings) and external, observable (behavior, results).

Learning practically, within the sessions, is achieved in the following ways:

Enhancing awareness.

Reflection and awareness (reflection & insights).

The coach's invitation to explore the unknown.

The implementation of planned actions.

Enhancing awareness.

The coachee understands more fully and conquers mentally a) the current situation where they live; and (b) the desired situation, That is, the goal he wants to achieve. It becomes aware of all aspects of the two situations (present and desired) and “discovers” new elements. The most important thing is that he understands the way he thinks and feels, that is, the beliefs and feelings that shape his perception. Thus, he turns his attention to himself, to what he can control and consciously prepares to implement any change.

Reflection and awareness (reflection & insights).

As awareness is enhanced, the client thinks about the way he thinks, feels and manages things. It works from a more supervisory perspective and thinks abstractly. At the same time, during several sessions the well-known “aha moments” occur, i.e. the moments that emerge in the mind realisations on the basis of which goals and actions can be redefined.

The coach's invitation to explore the unknown

Utilizing the stable and safe environment of the session, the experienced coach invites many times coachee to walk to places he hasn't visited so far. That is, to explore fields that he has so far avoided. Coaching actually starts where the client replies “I don’t know”. In this way, he discovers new elements, cultivates new skills and expands his boundaries. It is a well-known phrase that in order to achieve something that you have not achieved so far, you must do something that you have not done so far.

Implementation of planned actions

The product of the sessions (knowledge, realizations, reflections, conclusions) is transformed with the help of the coach into action plans. That is, in well-prepared “steps”. The coachee, by implementing these steps, acquires the experiential knowledge of the pursuit of his goals. And the knowledge gained in practice is invaluable. For this reason, in the sessions that follow, deep processing of this experience is carried out in order to enhance again the awareness of the present and desired situation with real data from the field.

Summarising

Developing through coaching therefore means that first of all I am strengthening my awareness of both my goals and myself, the mentality that accompanies me and I repeat. I better understand what I do, what I don't do, and I plan a conscious intervention in which I stop what drives me away from the goal and practice behaviors that lead to success.

Coaching means development and change, two concepts inextricably linked in an experience full of exploration, processing, learning, realizations and planning.
